Massive Fordite Cuff with Hidden Message – size 7″ – #417

This cuff is massive. It almost looks like you are wearing two cuffs at once. The lower cuff is thick sterling silver with a hammered finish and linear marks made by my favorite hammer. This part of the cuff has been oxidized to bring out the hammer marks and “sealed” with an archival acrylic wax to help protect the oxidized finish. The upper level is a narrower band of substantial, bright, tumble-polished silver. The setting for the Fordite is thick as is the silver back. The Fordite “stone” floats between the two levels. This cuff was made entirely by hand, one piece built on to another and soldered together one step at a time.

The inside of this cuff is stamped with the hidden message “the road is calling” and the inside of the wide level of the cuff has a fine texture from the steel I hammer my silver on.

This cuff features a piece of Fordite. Fordite is a “stone” comprised of many layers of automotive paint that used to build up on the rails in automotive plants. Cars are not painted in the same way today so “new” Fordite is not available. Parts would be sprayed with paint, then baked, then that was repeated over and over and layers of paint built up on the rails that held the parts. Eventually, the build-up became too thick and it was chipped off. Some clever person realized that if you cut and shaped it like a cabochon gemstone, you could reveal the layers of paint colors in swirls that looked similar to the patterns in agates and get a nice high polish on it like you would a gemstone or the surface of a recently-waxed car. Therefore, this material is also called “Detroit agate”. The information card pictured in this listing will be included with this cuff.

No two pieces of Fordite are ever the same, so this is truly a one of a kind piece.

This Fordite was polished by a professional stone cutter and I made the setting. The back is a solid, substantial piece of silver.

The Fordite is attached to the silver cuff with a silver tube rivet.

The width of this cuff at its widest point is 1 and 7/8″ tapering down to 5/8″.

This cuff fits a 7″ circumference wrist. There is minimal adjustment in this design, so please be sure of your wrist size before ordering.

I make sure that all of my edges and corners are smooth so this piece is a pleasure to wear.

Fordite CAN chip with a sharp impact on something pointed. It is best not to wear this cuff if you are doing heavy work of any kind.

If the silver of this piece tarnishes, it can be brightened with a polishing cloth.
