Special Collection – Royston Turquoise Pendant with Window on Back – pendant #8 – with Leather Notebook

Details

This Royston Turquoise stone is set in sterling silver with a solid silver back. The rings attached to the top have a hammered texture. All rings are soldered closed. This pendant is the smallest one in the batch and measures 3/4″ wide by 1″ long and is 1/4″ thick. This is the first collection of pieces stamped with the Red Ember Forge hallmark and “.925” indicating that the setting is sterling silver.

Royston Turquoise Special Collection

I have always loved Royston turquoise because it looks like the land itself as seen from above, with rocks and rivers and variations in color. I chose these stones for their rough, slabbed cut and very irregular shapes, thicknesses, and edges. The turquoise veins in Royston can vary from a dark blue to a gorgeous green. This stone encompasses two elements in one in appearance – earth and water. This is a special collection created from one batch of stones and it will not be repeated.

Keeping Notes

Each pendant comes with a pocket-sized handmade flexible wrap cover blank book with archival blank pages, stamped under the flap with what can be seen as a retro star or a very simplified symbol of the four directions. I have been a bookbinder for 28 years and each of these was handmade by me. To keeps notes while traveling – favorite parks, place names, plants, restaurants, whatever is most important to you. Each book as a printed colophon page at the back (pictured) with details about the materials and techniques used in making the book.

Breaking the Rules – Why Does the Setting Look so Funky?

There are some rules in metal work. One of those is “never fold the bezel of a setting over the top face of the stone”. With these stones, they were not cut for setting, so the sides were not necessarily tapered. This means that some parts of the bezels definitely had to overlap the top of the stone. These stones are set entirely in sterling silver and fine silver.

The back of each stone has a cutout to show the vein of turquoise that goes through the entire thickness of the stone. A little river of turquoise on the back.

Leather Elements

Each pendant is presented on a deerskin leather cord. It is designed to go over the head and hang lower on the chest. This makes it great for wearing with other, shorter necklaces for a layered look.
