Details
This stone, called Sonora Sunrise or Sonora Sunset, originates in Mexico and is found in copper mines. It is a mix of Cuprite (red) and Chrysocolla (blue/green) with the occasional band of black copper oxide. Each stone started as a rough-cut slab and was tumbled for days in a stone tumbler. The stone was polished to a satin finish and coated with a coat of archival acrylic wax. A hole was drilled through the stone and a hand-forged silver bail attached through the hole with a silver tube rivet. This stone does not “swing” on the bail; it is fixed in place. This stone comes on a 20″ stainless steel rolled box chain with a lobster claw clasp. While these stones have been tumbled extensively, it is not recommended that they be dropped on hard surfaces or worn in chlorinated water.
Details of This Specific Stone
The measurements on this stone (stone only excluding the silver bail) are 1 and 5/8″ tall by 5/8″ wide. That’s the max length of the stone from end to end, but the stone is riveted in the bail at an angle, so the the piece is not as wide as the full width when worn. This stone is a thinner pice and therefore lighter in weight. The photos show the front and the back of the stone. This stone has the most color variation of all in the collection from red to blue to green to even a slight mauve or purple band.
Sonoran Sunrise Special Collection
I have always loved the colors in Sonoran Sunrise because I love the combination of red and turquoise-esque blue/green. The veining in this stone is unique and forms lines and patterns throughout the uneven surface. I chose these stones for their deep color and interesting inclusions.
The Truly Minimalist Setting
Silver prices have gone through the roof in recent months. This collection was party in response to that, trying to figure out a way to create an interesting and unique pendant that used much less silver than a stone in a setting where the entire back is made up of silver sheet. The stones in this collection are the focus with a minimal forged/hammered sterling silver bail for the chain and a single tube rivet holding it all together. Since there is no “back”, these pendants are fully reversible. Wear whichever side has the pattern and color you like the most. The minimalist setting and tumbled stones also make these among my more affordable pendants while still have a truly great look and feel.
Stainless Steel Chain
Each pendant hangs from a stainless steel rolled 3mm box chain with a lobster clasp. The chain glides smoothly through the bail. Stainless chains are quite tough and this one has a nice weighty feel and unisex look.
More about Sonoran Sunrise
For those who believe in the metaphysical properties of gemstones, Sonoran Sunrise is described as a stone of self-betterment, allowing the wearer to get in touch with their emotions and “reset” their daily energy, getting back to what is truly most important. It is also said to boost confidence, creativity, and invest creative projects with passion and innovation. This is described on the card pictured in this listing which is included with the pendant. This is a relatively “new” stone, known commercially for the most part only since 2006.
